Rules

The basic rules and procedures for the Pioneers of the Diamond online baseball world are below, broken out by general headings. The POTD tries to abide by a spirit of the law approach rather than the rule of law, however some rules are rigid.

League Structure

  • 28 teams ( 14 per league)
  • 2 Leagues with three divisions each
  • Four Minor Leagues ( AAA, AA, A, Rookie)
  • 162 games for all levels
  • Coaches and Scouts turned off
  • No DH rule in the Majors, DH in the Minors

Playoff Structure

  • Three division winners and one wild card winner per League
  • Three rounds of playoffs, 7 games each

Sim Schedule

  • The League Commissioner will simulate the regular season using the following schedule unless stated differently via league wide email in advance
    • Tuesday @ 10:00pm EST
    • Thursday @ 10:00pm EST
    • Sunday @ 10:00pm EST
  • Each simulation will consist of one week’s worth of games, unless otherwise stated in a league wide e-mail, chat room and/or the Message Forum.
  • There is a single sim for each round of the playoffs

Financials

  • Player Expenses used to determine Luxury Tax
  • Luxury Tax threshold at 110% over league average
  • One dollar tax for every dollar over threshold at end of year
  • Cash maximum of 25M
  • All calculations made manually and applied after the Playoffs

Amateur Draft

  • The Amateur Draft is 10 rounds
  • The Amateur Draft is conducted though Statslab off the website for the first two rounds, including the Supplemental round.
  • Email lists may be submitted for rounds 3-10

Rosters

  • 25 man Major League roster
  • Unlimited Minor League roster limit Minor League
  • Ghost players used to fill unused minors roster spots
  • 40 man roster (player must be on 40 man roster to move to 25 man ML roster)

Disabled List

  • All players on a Major League roster who are injured may be place on the Disabled List for either 14 days or 60 days

Waivers

  • Waiver period is 8 days Player on 40 man roster must clear waivers before being removed form 40 man roster
  • Players on Major League roster without Option years must clear waivers to move to Minors
  • Waiver claims made in game (Forum has area to post Waivers to bring attention to players on Waivers.This is optional and is designed for moving unwanted players)

DFA (Designated for Assignment)

  • DFA period is 14 days Players left on DFA after 14 days are subject to assignment or release at Commissioner’s discretion

Free Agents

  • Free Agent offers made in game
  • Players signed via Free Agency in the off season cannot be traded until the all star break of the year they were signed
  • Contract Bonuses are limited to 2M for Diamond Hammer or Diamond Pitcher Awards Contract
  • Bonuses are limited to a maximum of 500 AB or 200 Innings pitched

Free Agent Compensation

  • In order to qualify for draft pick compensation for a lost free agent, general managers must offer salary arbitration to pending free agents before they file for free agency. This can be done via the Salary Arbitration page, which is visible from the League Menu starting on the first day of the offseason.
  • Type A free agents Former team receives signing team’s 1st pick overall and a ‘sandwich’ pick between the 1st and 2nd rounds No team may lose a top 14 1st round draft pick. A 2nd Round pick is substituted instead
  • Type B free agents Former team receives a ‘sandwich’ pick between the 1st and 2nd rounds Note: If you fail to offer salary arbitration to pending free agents, then you will not receive any draft pick compensation, even if you lose free agents to other teams!

Contract Extensions

  • Contract Extensions are made in game
  • There are limits to contract bonuses in order to remove exploits Contract
  • Bonuses are limited to a maximum of 500 AB or 200 Innings pitched Contract
  • Bonuses are limited to 1M Contract Bonuses are limited to 2M for Diamond Hammer or Diamond Pitcher Awards Bonuses offered beyond the above limits apply only to contracts awarded later than Opening Day 2027 game time Penalties apply to misuse of Contract Bonuses could include cancellation of contracts and release of player and/or cash penalties

Trading

  • Trade offers are to be made and negotiated via Email or Private Message
  • Completed Trades must be posted and approved by all parties in the proper section of the Forum
  • Players signed via Free Agency in the off season cannot be traded until the all star break of the year they were signed
  • All trades are subject to assessment by POTD Commissioner and may be voided with explanation
  • Draft Pick Trading currently not allowed.
  • ‘Player to be named later’ deals (PTBNL) are allowed but the Commissioner must be notified of any deal involving a draft pick. Free Agent Compensation will take precedence over any traded pick. The league does not officially sanction PTBNL deals and while every effort will be made to accommodate them, GMs make these deals at their own risk.

Releases

  • Players are released in game All remaining money on a released player’s contract is added to that year’s team expenses.

Cash Incentives

  • Players with cash remaining after the playoffs are eligible to purchase Cash Incentives.
  • All incentives must be declared and purchased prior to January 1st following the Playoffs.
  • Each request must be posted in the forum prior to the deadline. Each player may purchase only one incentive per year. There are three ranges of Incentives; 5 Million, 10 Million or 15 Million ( Contract Buyouts are handled differently)
  • The Incentive list is available on the Website
