Minneapolis Topples Vermont, 5-3
|
Mike Kern was outstanding against Vermont. The right-hander, who is tied for 3rd in the AP in wins with 4, had a screwball that was virtually unhittable at times. The result was a Maulers 5-3 win. Kern yielded 3 runs over 7.2 innings to notch the win. He scattered 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 9. His record improves to 4-1. George McCreehy recorded his 4th save for Minneapolis.
Minneapolis used a clutch at-bat from Bart Matthews to capture the win. The catcher hammered a 2-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to put the Maulers ahead, 5-2. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a humdinger.
Minneapolis manager was pleased with the team's effort. "Our guys played hard," he said.
The defeat makes Vermont 10-25.
