The Death Valley Burn had to overcome a fine effort from San Jose pitcher Chad Smith to grab a narrow 5-4 win at Welsh Field. Smith went 6.1 innings and allowed 2 runs. Death Valley, at 44-29, is 7 games up in the Frontier Southern.

It could have been a different outcome for Death Valley, had it not been for Will Turner, the 28-year old left fielder . Turner contributed a run-scoring ground out in the top of the fourth inning to put Death Valley up, 1-0.

"We found a way to get it done," Turner said.
