Cheesesteaks Win at Home, 8-6
|
Philadelphia center fielder Steve Baker played a vital role in his team's 8-6 conquest of Crab Apple Cove. He was 4 for 5 with a double and 3 singles, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once for Philadelphia. Tomás Quintero, the winner, goes to 13-3. He allowed 3 runs on 6 hits, with 2 walks and 7 strikeouts over 6.1 innings. Leonard Johnston converted his 21st save in 23 tries.
The Mashers had been locked in a 3-3 tie with the Cheesesteaks going into the bottom of the sixth inning. That changed quickly when the 26-year old right fielder Bill Fletcher came to the plate. Fletcher hit a run-scoring double on a 1-2 sinker from Crab Apple Cove hurler Elvin Lawson. It was Fletcher's 14th double of the year.
"Our approach was just to try to see something over the plate and be aggressive," Baker told the Philadelphia Times.
The first-place Cheesesteaks have a one-game lead in their division.
