Getting an impressive start from Ernest Reese, Vermont beat Michigan by the score of 3-2. The winner was Vermont reliever Edward Rascoe, now 5-7. The loser was Juan Solís. The Lake Monsters sport a record of 59-92.
Had Lawrence Smith not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and the bases loaded, Smith hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 3-2, in favor of the Lake Monsters.
"I'm not out there for personal accomplishments," Smith told a Vermont Times reporter after the game. "I'm out there to help the team win, and that's what we did today."
