Lake Monsters Beat Maulers, 6-2
|
Vermont starter Hoyt Murphy had a strong outing against the Minneapolis Maulers at Welsh Field. The right-hander was a big part of his team's 6-2 win. The winning pitcher was Murphy, now 14-5. He tossed 6 innings of 4-hit ball, while walking 1 and fanning 11. The save was credited to Iván Ruíz, his 37th.
The Lake Monsters got a big at-bat from left fielder Juan Martínez. For the game, Martínez was 1-4 with a home run and a walk. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2. In the bottom of the fifth, with a runner on 1st, he stroked a 2-run home run. His 27th home run of the season gave Vermont a 3-1 lead.
"We'll savor this win," Martínez told the Vermont Observer, "then get ready for the next game."
The Lake Monsters, at 99-56, have a comfortable 20-game lead in their division.
