Maulers Curb Monuments, 2-1

The Minneapolis Maulers earned a close win over the Washington Monuments, thanks in part to George McCreehy. The Minneapolis right-hander, who is tied for 2nd in the AP in quality starts with 7, played a key role in the 2-1 victory. McCreehy, now 3-1, was the winner. In 5.2 innings, he gave up 4 hits, while striking out 7, walking 3, and allowing 1 run. The Maulers bumped their record to 26-22 with this win.
With scoring opportunities rare, the Maulers had to cash in when they had the chance. One such opportunity presented itself in the bottom of the fifth, when shortstop Richie Stoyte hit a run-scoring single. The single came off Ted Stevens and made the score 2-1, Maulers. Stoyte was 2 for 4 with 2 singles.
"Makes our job easier," said Stoyte, "when our pitchers shut the opposition down."
